Remove tree suckers.

The trees planted in Alder Crossing front yards are grafted
trees; trees where the root from one variety is added to the top of a different
variety. This can be seen near the base
of the tree. Since the root tries to
find the path of least resistance, it sends up “suckers”, which if left
untended will grow stronger than the grafted part of the tree making it not what was intended. Simply trim as close to the base as you can
to keep your tree looking great. Don’t forget to water regularly
during the dry summer.
Use a natural
organic, slow release fertilizer.
Using a slow release, natural organic fertilizer only requires twice a year application, suggested in May and September. This is a better type of fertilizer of natural compounds versus petroleum “quick release” types which give your grass a type of sugar high and leach unabsorbed compounds into streams and water sources.

Consider Mulch
Mowing.
Mulch mowing your lawn returns the grass clippings to the lawn, returning at least 25% of your lawns required nitrogen. As an added bonus, it also reduces yard waste and time spent emptying your lawn bag.

Water Deeply, but
infrequently.
Summer will be here before we know it, and so will dry brown lawns. To help keep your lawn green and thriving during the hot days, encourage deep root growth in your lawn. To do so, water about 1 inch per week during the hot months, less as the temperature dips. Water slowly to prevent water from puddling or water runoff, even breaking up your watering into short segments.
